Newsletter February 2020

24 February 2020 //  by Admin//  Leave a Comment

The green – opens 12.30pm on Saturday 21 March
What a great looking green we have – it really is getting better every year. Thanks to greenkeeper Ian, Jimmy and the dedicated members who helped with the back-breaking work at the end of the season. Thanks also goes to Andy C, Shaun and Dave C who have made the repairs to the floodlight by the toilet.

Quiz night – Sunday 1 March, 6.30pm, Hydro Hotel
The cost is £10 per person, which includes a meal (chicken curry or lamb hotpot) and entry into the quiz. Numbers need to be confirmed by 26 February. If you would like to go, please let Norman (452294) or Paula (411300) know. Nonmembers are welcome. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let Norman know.

Social get together – Thursday 12 March, Woodbourne Pub from 7pm
A friendly get together for members and new members and to confirm teams. Just turn up on the night.

Come and try bowls coaching – from Saturday 14 March
Mervin and Andy C will be at the green for an hour (11.30pm to 12.30pm) every Saturday throughout the season to coach new players and give assistance to anyone requiring help with bowling. These sessions are open to nonmembers too. We have all the equipment – they only need flat shoes.

Easter egg roll – Saturday 21 March, 1pm start

To celebrate the opening – and to collect subs – we’ll be holding the Easter Egg Roll on 21 March. As usual, the competition will be run as a round robin – pairs or triples depending on the numbers. The draw will take place at 12.50pm, so please be at the green by 12.45pm. Entry is £2, and everyone gets an Easter Egg – the winners will receive larger eggs and the Manx America Cup. Food and club shirts (£12 each) will be available.

The club is always on the lookout for new members – male and female of all ages – so please bring along a friend. Coaching for new bowlers will be available from 11.30pm

Membership fees

Full members: £60, Juniors: £10, Novice bowlers: £37 (for the first year), Social bowlers: £20.

Club competitions

We plan to hold as many club competitions as possible this season. The dates for these will be announced shortly so please keep an eye on the notice board or the website. Many of our club comps are handicapped, so new bowlers will receive an advantage over more experienced bowlers.

DBC Open Competitions

  • Saturday 11 April Mixed Doubles – sponsored by Avant Amenity IOM
  • Sunday 24 May Mixed Doubles – sponsored by Haldane Fisher
  • Saturday 2 August Men’s and Ladies’ Town Cups – sponsored by 3Rs

Junior Coaching
Junior coaching starts on our green on 14 March, initially for the Manx Youth Games but this will continue every Saturday throughout the season. Sessions last 1 hour (10.30-11.30am) and cost £1 per child. If you know of any juniors wishing to try bowls, please let them know.
